Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar, one of India’s greatest thinkers and social reformers, had an extraordinary educational journey marked by determination, brilliance, and courage. Born on 14 April 1891 in Mhow, he belonged to a socially oppressed community that had very limited access to education. However, Ambedkar’s father strongly believed in learning and encouraged him to study. This support became the foundation of Ambedkar’s lifelong academic excellence.

Ambedkar began his early schooling at a government school in Satara and later in Bombay. Even though he faced discrimination from classmates and teachers, he always stood out because of his intelligence and discipline. In 1907, he passed the matriculation exam from Elphinstone High School, becoming one of the first from his community to do so. His success was widely celebrated, and it opened the door to higher studies.

He joined Elphinstone College and completed his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1912 from the University of Bombay with a major in Economics and Political Science. Soon after finishing his BA, the Maharaja of Baroda, Sayajirao Gaekwad III, awarded him a scholarship to study abroad. With this support, Ambedkar travelled to the United States and joined Columbia University in 1913. There he completed his Master’s degree in Economics in 1915. Fascinated with social problems and economic structures, he continued his research and earned a Ph.D. in Economics from Columbia in 1917. His thesis, “The Evolution of Provincial Finance in British India,” is still considered an important study.

After returning to India for a short period, Ambedkar went to England in 1920 to study at the prestigious London School of Economics (LSE). There he worked toward another doctoral degree. At the same time, he studied law at Gray’s Inn. In 1923, he successfully completed his D.Sc. (Doctor of Science) in Economics from LSE, making him one of the most highly educated Indians of his time. He also became a qualified barrister after finishing his law studies.

Ambedkar’s education was not just about earning degrees. Every stage of his academic journey shaped his understanding of society, inequality, and justice. His studies in economics, law, history, and politics helped him develop strong ideas about social reform. Later, as the chief architect of the Indian Constitution, these ideas played a key role in building a nation based on equality and human rights.
