BrahMos is one of the fastest and most powerful supersonic cruise missiles in the world. It is often called “Brahmastra” because of its destructive power, just like the legendary weapon from Indian mythology. The name BrahMos comes from the combination of two rivers – Brahmaputra from India and Moskva from Russia – showing the joint partnership between the two countries. This missile was developed by BrahMos Aerospace, a joint venture between India’s DRDO and Russia’s NPO Mashinostroyenia.
The BrahMos missile was first tested successfully in 2001 and has since become a key part of India’s defense system. It can be launched from land, sea, air, and even submarines, making it a highly flexible weapon. The missile travels at a speed of nearly Mach 3, which is three times the speed of sound. Because of this high speed, it is very difficult for enemy defense systems to detect and stop.

The missile uses a combination of inertial navigation, satellite guidance, and active radar homing to strike its target with high accuracy. One of the most important features of BrahMos is its versatility. It can destroy enemy warships, bunkers, radar stations, air bases, and other strategic targets. The air-launched version of BrahMos is fitted on the Indian Air Force’s Su-30MKI fighter jets, giving India a powerful long-range strike capability. The Indian Army and Navy also use BrahMos as a major part of their strike force.
