Che Guevara was one of the most influential and controversial revolutionaries of the 20th century. His full name was Ernesto “Che” Guevara, and he was born on 14 June 1928 in Argentina. He was trained as a medical doctor, but he became famous worldwide as a Marxist revolutionary, guerrilla leader, and political thinker.
In his youth, Che Guevara traveled across several countries in Latin America. During these journeys, he witnessed extreme poverty, social injustice, exploitation of workers, and lack of healthcare. These experiences deeply affected him and shaped his political ideology. He came to believe that capitalism was responsible for inequality and that only a radical change in society could bring justice to the poor. This led him toward Marxism and socialism.
In 1955, Che met Fidel Castro in Mexico. This meeting changed his life. He joined Castro’s revolutionary movement to overthrow the Cuban dictator Fulgencio Batista. Che played a crucial role in the Cuban Revolution (1956–1959) as a guerrilla commander. After the success of the revolution, he became a key leader in the new Cuban government and held positions such as Minister of Industries and President of the National Bank.
Despite holding high government posts, Che was not comfortable with power or a settled life. He believed that revolution should spread globally to end oppression everywhere. Therefore, he left Cuba to support revolutionary movements in other countries. He first went to Congo, but the mission failed. Later, he went to Bolivia, hoping to ignite a revolution there.
In Bolivia, Che faced strong opposition from the army, supported by the United States. He was captured in October 1967 and executed on 9 October 1967. His death turned him into a symbol of rebellion.
Che Guevara remains a highly debated figure. Supporters see him as a hero who fought for equality, justice, and the poor. Critics consider him a violent revolutionary who supported armed struggle and executions. Even today, Che Guevara’s image represents resistance, revolution, and idealism across the world.
