D. B. Cooper is the name given to an unidentified man who carried out one of the most famous unsolved crimes in American history. On November 24, 1971, the day before Thanksgiving, Cooper hijacked Northwest Orient Airlines Flight 305, a Boeing 727 flying from Portland, Oregon, to Seattle, Washington. What makes this case unique is that Cooper hijacked the plane, collected ransom money, and then disappeared without ever being identified.
The man boarded the plane using the name “Dan Cooper”, which was likely an alias. After takeoff, he calmly handed a note to a flight attendant stating that he had a bomb in his briefcase. He demanded $200,000 in cash, four parachutes, and a fuel truck ready in Seattle. The authorities agreed to his demands to ensure passenger safety.
After the plane landed in Seattle, Cooper released all passengers in exchange for the ransom and parachutes. He then ordered the pilots to fly the aircraft toward Mexico at a low altitude and slow speed. Somewhere over the forested region of the Pacific Northwest, Cooper opened the rear stairway of the Boeing 727 and parachuted into the night, carrying the ransom money.
What happened next is the great mystery. Despite one of the largest manhunts in FBI history, D. B. Cooper was never found. No body, parachute, or equipment was recovered. In 1980, a small portion of the ransom money was discovered buried along the Columbia River, suggesting that Cooper may not have survived the jump. However, no conclusive evidence was ever found to confirm his fate.
The mystery deepens because no one knows who Cooper really was. Over the years, the FBI investigated hundreds of suspects, including military veterans and skydivers, but none could be definitively linked to the crime. The name “D. B. Cooper” itself was a mistake by the media, yet it became permanently associated with the case.
In 2016, the FBI officially closed its active investigation, admitting that the case had gone cold. Still, the story of D. B. Cooper remains legendary. He is remembered as a bold, calm hijacker who vanished into history, leaving behind one of the greatest unsolved mysteries of the 20th century.
