William Wordsworth was one of the greatest English poets and a leading figure of the Romantic Movement in English literature. He was born on 7 April 1770 in Cockermouth, England. Wordsworth is best known for his deep love of nature, simple language, and poetry that focuses on human emotions and everyday life.
Wordsworth believed that poetry should be written in the language of common people, not in complex or artificial words. He felt that true poetry comes from strong feelings and emotions, which are remembered and then expressed calmly. This idea is clearly explained in the Preface to Lyrical Ballads, which he wrote with his close friend Samuel Taylor Coleridge. This book, published in 1798, marked the beginning of the Romantic Age in English literature.
Nature plays a central role in Wordsworth’s poetry. He saw nature as a teacher, guide, and healer of the human soul. According to him, nature helps people develop moral values and inner peace. In poems like Tintern Abbey, I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud (Daffodils), and The Prelude, he describes nature not just as scenery, but as a living force that shapes human thoughts and feelings.
Wordsworth also focused on childhood, believing that children are closer to nature and purity than adults. He felt that as people grow older, they lose this natural innocence. This theme is seen in poems such as Ode: Intimations of Immortality. His long autobiographical poem The Prelude describes the growth of his own mind under the influence of nature.
In 1843, William Wordsworth became the Poet Laureate of England, which was a great honor. He continued writing poetry throughout his life, though his later works were considered less powerful than his early poems. He died on 23 April 1850.
William Wordsworth’s contribution to English literature is immense. He changed the way poetry was written by bringing it closer to real life and nature. His poems still inspire readers to appreciate nature, simplicity, and inner emotions, making him one of the most respected poets in the history of English literature.
